MARCH 21, 2025

Volunteers of America Chesapeake & Carolinas (VOACC) is pleased to announce the appointment of Darrin Mitchell as the new Vice President of Maryland Programs. With over 20 years of experience in behavioral health and primary healthcare operations, including work in the re-entry field, Darrin brings a deep commitment to improving healthcare access and outcomes for vulnerable communities.
Having lived in the Maryland region for the past 15 years, Darrin began his career as a therapist, providing individual and group counseling in stress management, substance use, and domestic violence prevention. Recognizing the systemic challenges faced by both patients and providers, he transitioned into healthcare leadership, taking on key operational roles at Centurion Health, The Mental Health Center, Wellpath, YesCare, and PsychoGeriatric Services. His expertise spans multi-site healthcare management, program expansion, and service quality improvement, making him a vital addition to the VOACC leadership team.
“Joining VOACC is the perfect next step in my journey. I began as a therapist but found my true calling in healthcare operations—optimizing systems so clinicians can focus on care. With years of experience, I’m committed to continuing the work of removing barriers and enhancing systems that support both our teams and the communities we serve.”
– Darrin Mitchell, Vice President of Maryland Programs
Darrin holds a Master of Science in Counseling from Troy University and is certified in Lean Six Sigma, equipping him with the skills to drive operational efficiency and strategic growth. Beyond his professional work, he enjoys horticulture, woodworking, exploring new places, and mentoring others. Most importantly, he values time with his wife and two sons.
Please join us in welcoming Darrin as he embarks on this new role.
About Volunteers of America Chesapeake & Carolinas
Volunteers of America Chesapeake & Carolinas (“VOACC”) is a faith-based, nonprofit organization whose mission is to inspire self-reliance, dignity, and hope through housing, health and human services.
At VOACC, we have been helping to create Healthy Communities for All for over 129 years by aligning housing, health and human services. We actively pursue health equity by filling the gap in housing and care for underserved populations, including those who are experiencing homelessness, low-income, underinsured or uninsured, justice-involved and veterans. By offering integrated housing and care, we address the social determinants that impact the long-term stability for those in need.
Through a dedicated team of management, staff and volunteers who are guided by our Core Values – Visionary, One Body, Integrity, Compassion, Excellence, and Faith – we are the safety net for thousands of men, women and children each year across Maryland, the District of Columbia, Virginia and the Carolinas. We operate over 49 programs focused on 8 areas of service: homeless services, affordable housing, mental health, substance use recovery, intellectual/developmental disabilities services, community re-entry, veteran services and workforce development.
VOACC has over 800 staff members and more than 2,000 volunteers. The organization helps over 9,675 individuals and families every year from Maryland, Virginia, the District of Columbia and the Carolinas. For more information on VOACC, please visit www.voachesapeake.org.
